“In a portrait, you have room to have a point of view and to be conceptual with a picture. The image may not be literally what’s going on, but it’s representative.” - Annie Leibovitz

My favorite parts of this design would be the hair, the lips, and the sweater! Making the hair was daunting at first because I had never drawn realistic hair in Illustrator before, but the solution to making it turn out well was actually very simple. It was all about the shine on her hair; I knew if I could capture that, then the hair would have more dimension to it, so I used the pen tool to make hair-like shapes. Re-creating the lips was interesting because it’s difficult to draw thicker lips without making the subject look like a clown, but I added just enough detail without exaggerating the look of them. The blob brush was especially helpful in this case since the lips needed more color to make them POP. Lastly, I just love the texture on the sweater! I get a lot of use out of the grain filter.

This was a cool project I made for my best friend. She loves the Addams Family, especially the character Morticia, so I drew my friend as Morticia Addams with a twist: she’s anime style! I love anime so I had to do it. I really enjoyed making the shiny, voluminous hair with the pen tool. I always loved drawing big wavy hair. The anime eyes really brought everything together. I stared at anime eyes for days until I finally found a pair of eyes I was inspired by. Also the creepy hand shadow was a very nice touch. It complimented the surprised look on her face. The gaussian blur filter gave the shadows their softness.

Such long work for a simple design! I made each individual triangle shape by hand with the pen tool, which took me 4 HOURS. Coloring in the shapes with the live paint bucket tool took about 30 minutes since I saved all the colors I needed ahead of time into the color swatches. Even though it took forever to draw all of those shapes, the work was worth it because this design turned out beautifully! I’m thinking of making a lot more of these to build an entire collection of poly portrait art.
