My absolute favorite thing I’ve designed so far! She’s GORGEOUS. I gave her the perfect name, an Igbo (Nigerian) name that means “Queen of ravishing beauty who is spontaneous and versatile by nature.” As a Nigerian woman who loves art and anime, I’ve always wanted to see more people like me represented in the kind of media that I enjoy. So I decided to make it myself! This piece was inspired by 70s anime (the huge sparkly eyes are a dead giveaway) and art nouveau style. The pen tool was my best friend for this project; I drew everything with it. The eyes and hair were very fun to draw! I currently have this poster hanging on the wall in my room and my older sister has another copy in her work office. It’s so cool to hear from her that people who stop by her office always compliment my sister on the poster, and she happily mentions me as the artist.

A goal of mine is to create as much diverse art as I can. This piece is no exception! Being African-American is a huge part of my identity and I want to show that in my artwork whenever possible. Continuous line drawings are my current obsession so when I had to come up with a poster idea for my commercial printing class, this naturally came to mind. It’s actually an expansion of the design on my business card. I thought it would be awesome to make a whole afro in this style, and it really was!

Another strong favorite of mine. I’m very proud of this poster design because I designed the typeface myself! Those letters cannot be found in that style in adobe fonts or on DaFont.com…yet. Hopefully someday it will be a real font! Of course I’m back at it again with the continuous line drawings. My idea of this was to draw the goddess Venus as a Black woman, and I specifically wanted text going across the poster (I just didn’t know I would be making the text myself at the time). It’s a simple yet beautiful poster.

A new take on an old design of mine. I once made a very similar piece back in 2015 when I took a computer art class. Back then I was only being taught destructive editing (can you imagine all of those lost pixels!?). Now that I have a better understanding of Photoshop, I’m able to create things like this while still retaining my original images. I just think that’s really cool! This design basically represents my growth as a graphic designer. I still have a lot more growing to do!
